Ocarina
What is an Ocarina?
"An ocarina is a type of wind instrument, or aerophone, in which sound is produced by the vibration of air. Unlike flutes, ocarinas are not tubes but consist of one or more enclosed, rounded chambers. They produce sound when air vibrates within the enclosure and exits through a hole near the mouthpiece."

Requirements:
Create an ocarina by slipping and scoring 2 pinch pots together aiming for uniform thickness. Paddle and manipulate the shape before creating any holes. Applique on a mouthpiece, create an opening for the sound to be released, pierce a minimum of two holes (to create various pitch notes), and add a minimum of 2 additional decorative techniques of your choice. Place the opening at the correct angle to the mouthpiece (see diagram below) to ensure sound is created. Gaze, paint or stain your ocarina after being bisque fired being sure to pay attention to detail with good quality and craftsmanship
Grading: 25 points
5 points: Ocarina is made using 2 pinch pots which were attached and blended together. The pinch technique was used and it is clear the student attempted to get uniform thickness throughout.
5 points: A minimum of 5 decorative items are included (one appliqued mouthpiece, 2 pierced holes, and 2 additional decorative elements of your choice). It is clear the student put forth effort into the decorative elements. The design is appropriate and refined.
5 points: Mouthpiece and holes were properly placed. There is a clear attempt at making the piece work (able to produce sound).
3 points: First and last name visible on bottom of pot.
2 points: After completion, self-reflection questions are thoughtfully answered
5 points: If glazed, bottom and edge are free from glaze, and no runners were used. The holes and mouth piece are not clogged with glaze. If painted, the student put forth obvious effort using different colors and making lines clean and defined. If stained, the piece was glaze fired and time and effort are apparent.
