Sustained Investigation
Portfolio #1
P.F 2018-2019
My concentration is in response to the division between rich and poor in regards to their access to food choices. This idea was brought up by my curiosity in documentaries about food and how each social class maintains and acquires their diet. I created a series of pieces that reflected this issue and show the difference between living in poverty and living with wealth. For my creations, I wanted them to show the comparison amongst diverse income levels and how diet can be directly affected by life and society.
In sculptures 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, and 10, I utilized miniatures, small figures and food items made out of polymer clay to represent the difference between social classes. I revised my first ideas of these pieces into miniatures, in order to capture more detail and show the divide between rich and poor. Sculptures 4, 5, and 6 exhibit larger objects made from clay. These works reveal how big the issue is of affording food, by showing off larger scale items. I experimented with different techniques to sculpt food. Firstly, I tried to make each food item as realistic as possible by sculpting clay. Also, by using shading and vibrant colors which are found in many food items.
