I.M. 2020-2021
Artist Statement:
Throughout this concentration the question i asked was: how can I create a series of sculptures to communicate the Human Experience of Anxiety? This series is based on the experiences of anxiety I have had throughout my teenage years. Using mixed media along with clay i have created sculptures of human body parts to convey how anxiety may affect someone. I have also created a Large Material based sculpture signifying the dark scary mass that is Anxiety.
Through conveying specific feelings or making “the anxiety” in general I hope to connect with viewers that have had similar experiences.
Throughout my process I changed some of ideas from my original sketches. For example in sculpture 3 (ribs) I originally intended for it to be a perfect rib cage however during the process it proved hard to construct without drying too fast or falling apart. When my sculpture collapsed i realized that the ribs being broken added to the theme and created a dramatic effect with only thin thread holding the ribs together. In pieces 1 (heart) and 4 (half head) I originally was solely going to use paint but i later on decided to add a collage element that ultimately added to the pieces. In ‘blurred Vision’ the collage on the eyes and inside the head were all blurry photos that hardly resemble a specific subject. This added to the concept of vision blurring when you are experiencing a panic attack. On ‘Anatomy of Fear’ There is a magazine cutout i added later on in the process that says “Think you can handle it?” This adds to the piece symbolizing a fast beating heart as people often question if they are having a heart attack when often it is a panic attack. When creating the black material sculpture i experimented with creating volume by folding the fabric while running it through the sewing machine.
