Sustained Investigation

artist statement:
My concentration was influenced by my identification as a STEM nerd and foodie. At school, we are taught that humans lie at the top of the food chain, but what if that were not the case? I explored what a “human cuisine” would look like.
There are often multiple ways to prepare a dish. Eyes can be used as lollipops (#1) or be pickled (#2), toes can be used as curry ingredients (#3), and blood vessels can be deviled egg filling (#4), but all three can combine into an assorted sushi dish (#5). Fingers can be eaten as Ladyfinger biscuits (#6) or as fries (#7).
Some pieces developed through naming convention. #1 was inspired by “eye candy,” #3 uses toes for a “potatoe” curry rice, #6 was inspired by Ladyfingers (they were also modeled after my own fingers, and I am a girl), and #8 was inspired by “pizza face.”
Many anatomical structures resemble foods that we eat. Eyes resemble lollipop heads (#1), blood vessels resemble deviled egg filling (#4), fingers resemble fries (#7), and teeth resemble pomegranate seeds (#10). Although I wanted to make a “strawberry nose” piece, using tongues as strawberries felt more dynamic since both are red, hence the creation of tongue shortcake (#9).
